Notes

Adelia Catherine HAWKINS was born 13 Jul. 1889 / Married Ellis E. Horton - date unknown but probably late 1909 or early 1910, as 1910 Census (dated 15 April 1910) lists them as having been married less than a year / Died 06 July 1984. Buried in the Old Dutch Flat Cemetery – Located between Mills and Burton, Nebraska - also called the Jordan Valley Cemetery, established in 1893 / Spouse: Ellis E. HORTON (Mom says name was Herbert or Hubert, but have found his tombstone next to that of Adelia and his first wife, Mary, who died before he and Adelia were married) – Born 01 Feb. 1869 / M1. To Mary E. _____ (born 19 Feb 1878, died 17 July 1905); M2. To Adelia Catherine HAWKINS sometime between 1905 & 1910 / Died 11 Oct. 1942. Ellis is buried in the Old Dutch Flat Cemetery (Also known as the Jordan Valley Cemetery, located near Springview, between Mills and Burton, Nebraska) next to his wives, Adelia C. HAWKINS and Mary E. ______. Message on Mary’s tombstone says “Wife of E. E. Horton.” // ***** // ***** // Have copy of souvenir card with following info attached: "Adelia Catherine Hawkins, Teacher of West Middle Creek School, District No. 36 - Year 1908 // ***** // The following text is printed on the front under a photo of a teacher (Adelia, I presume?) and an illustration of children & 2-3 teachers in front of a school. "The school is out - a little draught, We've drunk at Wisdom's Spring. May deeper draughts by us be quaffed, And may we to her cling." . . . . I'm guessing this may have been a list of graduates or end-of-year program of some sort, but card is quite small, only about 3"x 5" folded (finished size - or about 1/4 sheet of computer paper) // ***** // ***** // ***** // I have recently discovered family records which suggest that Adelia C. and Ellis E. Horton had other children, however I'm not certain I have exact names and dates for any except Clifton, Mildred, & Lois - have found an entry on Internment.net that reads: Horton, Clifton, b. Sep 30, 1910, d. Apr 16, 1912, "Son of E.E. & A.C. Horton" (the parents' names/initials fit) - still looking for others. // The Horton family (Adelia Catherine, Ellis E., and daughters Mildred Evelyn and Lois Mary) lived in Burton (I have photos of the family at their home in Burton) and both Adelia and Ellis are buried in Jordan Valley Cemetery, between Mills and Burton. This child - if a member of this family - would have been born two years before the older daughter (Mildred Evelyn) and would have died one month before her birth. // ***** // ***** // ***** // ***** // 1910 NE Census > KEYA PAHA County > BURTON PCT > Series: T624 Roll: 848 Page: 135 : Enumerated 15 April 1910 > HORTON, Ellis E. - Head - White Male - age 41 - 2nd Marriage of 0 years - Born Iowa - Father and Mother born Indiana - Occupation, Farmer - > Wife - HORTON, Adelia C. - White Female - age 20 - 1st Marriage of 0 years - 0 Children with 0 Living - Born Nebraska - Father born Illinois - Mother born Nebraska - // ***** // ***** // ***** // ***** // 1920 NE Census > KEYA PAHA County > BURTON PCT > Series: T625 Roll: 994 Page: 4 : Enumerated 18 January 1920 > HORTON, Ellis E. - Head - White Male - age 50 - Married - Born Iowa - Father and Mother born Indiana - > Wife - Occupation, Farmer on Own farm - > Wife - HORTON, Adelia C. - White Female - age 30 - Married - Born Nebraska - Father born Illinois - Mother born Nebraska - > HORTON, Mildred - White Female - age 7 - Born Nebraska - Father born Iowa - Mother born Nebraska - > HORTON, Lois - White Female - age 4 8/12 - Born Nebraska - Father born Iowa - Mother born Nebraska // ***** // ***** // ***** // ***** /// Have found entry in Burton Cemetery for a Clifton Horton, born 30 Sept. 1910, died 16 April 1912, listed as the "son of E.E. and A.C. Horton." This would appear to be a first child for Adelia C. and Ellis E. HORTON, as they were married sometime before or in early 1910 and their oldest daughter, Mildred, was born in 1912.
